Saint Isidore the Farmer was born in 1070 to a poor family of farmers in Madrid, Spain. He was named Isidore in honor of the famous Archbishop of Seville. Isidore worked as a daily laborer in the farm of a wealthy man named John de Vargas, located in Torregalaluna, outside of Madrid. He married a poor woman named Maria de la Cabeza. Though they had a son, the child died at a young age. Following this tragedy, the couple decided to dedicate their lives entirely to the service of God.

Isidore’s life was very simple. He was a model of charity and faith. Even while working, he would pray; in his free time, he would visit churches, and he would always share his food with the poor.

Isidore was very hardworking. However, at one point, a complaint was raised against him to his employer. The allegation was that Isidore arrived late to work every day because he went to church early in the morning to attend Holy Mass. When questioned about this, Isidore did not deny it and responded:

“Sir, it is true that I arrive a little later than the other workers. But the time I spend in prayer, I make up for by working more diligently. I humbly request you to compare my work with that of the others. If you find that I have in any way deceived you, I am willing to repay you from my own personal savings.”

The employer did not say anything to him then, but he remained doubtful. One day, to find out the truth, he got up early in the morning and hid near the church. As he waited, he saw Isidore arrive and enter the church. As soon as the Mass ended, Isidore went directly to the fields. Following him, the employer saw Isidore plowing the field.

But what astonished him was this: through the misty morning light, he thought he saw a white ox yoked beside Isidore’s, moving back and forth across the field. Amazed, he ran toward the field but could only see Isidore and his single yoke.

When he asked Isidore about it, the saint replied:

“Sir, I work alone. I rely only on God for strength, and I know no one else.”

This story soon spread. It was believed that angels came to assist Saint Isidore in his work—such was the holiness of his life. Although he was poor, he was charitable to the best of his ability. Though a simple farm laborer, his speech was clear and purposeful.

One snowy day, Saint Isidore was on his way to the mill with the grain his wife had gathered. On the frozen ground, he saw a group of pigeons struggling to find food. Moved by compassion, and ignoring the ridicule of onlookers, he poured out half of the grain in his sack onto the ground for the birds. But when he reached the mill, his sack was still full, and the grain yielded more flour than expected.

These kinds of small acts marked Isidore’s life. He was not a bishop who governed a diocese, nor a martyr who shed blood for his faith, but a humble servant of God who lived righteously in fields and farms. Saint Isidore passed into eternal rest in the year 1130.

After his death, his pious wife lived for nearly 40 more years. Later, his remains were moved to an altar. Due to the miracles that occurred through his intercession, his fame spread far and wide. It is said that in 1211, he appeared in a vision to King Alfonso of Castile and revealed to him a secret war route that enabled the king to defeat the Moors.

At the insistence of King Philip III, the process of Isidore’s canonization was initiated. Historians attest that Philip III himself was miraculously healed of a fatal illness through the saint’s intercession. Isidore was canonized in the year 1622.

In earlier times, his feast day was celebrated on both May 10 and March 22. In America, his feast is celebrated on October 25. In Madrid, Spain, on his feast day, church bells are rung, the streets are decorated, and processions are held in his honor.

In art, Saint Isidore is often depicted as a farmer standing with a sickle and a sheaf of corn, or holding a sickle and a staff, or being assisted by an angel in his field, or giving rosaries to children near a well. In Spanish art, he is symbolized by a spade and a yoke.
