May 14: വിശുദ്ധ മത്തിയാസ്

Among the first followers of our Saviour Jesus, Saint Matthias was one of the 72 disciples. He was a witness to all the divine works of Jesus up until His resurrection. The prophecy made by David, that someone would take the place of the traitor Judas, was believed to refer to Saint Matthias.

During the period between the Resurrection of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit, it was necessary to complete the number of apostles, which had been divinely established by Jesus as twelve. The lot fell on Matthias, and he was chosen to fill that vacant position. He shared in the sufferings endured by the apostolic community in Jerusalem.

When the time came for the apostles to spread across the world as representatives of Christ, Saint Matthias travelled to the regions assigned to him. According to tradition, he journeyed to Cappadocia and to provinces along the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Unlike the feast days and biographical details available for other apostles, much specific information about the virtues, labours, and sufferings of Saint Matthias remains scarce.

However, Clement of Alexandria recorded a few of the saint’s teachings. One of those teachings remains especially relevant to modern spirituality:

“Sin has distorted the divine order established by the Creator. It urges humans to cling to degrading things. The only way to return to the divine glory that God gave us at the time of creation is by firmly subjecting the body to the soul. But the soul, too, has been weakened by original sin and leans toward evil. Deep faith and knowledge are the remedies for this.”
