Saint Fiacre was born into a noble family in Ireland. In France, he is known as Saint Fiacre. He was educated under a bishop and grew up in deep devotion to God. Realizing that all earthly gains were useless in attaining Christ, Fiacre left his country, along with some devout companions, to live a life of solitude dedicated to God. They traveled to France and arrived in the city of Meaux, where Fiacre met the local bishop, Saint Faro. When Fiacre introduced himself, the bishop was amazed to see signs of goodness and ability in this stranger and granted him a place for solitary living in the forest of Breuil, in the province of Brie.

Fiacre cleared the trees, made the land clean, and built a small hermitage with a garden. In it, he constructed a prayer room under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The monk Fiacre spent most of his day there in prayer. He cultivated his garden, working hard to provide for his own needs. His way of life was very austere. Gradually, many people began to visit the saint for counsel and comfort.

Later, a short distance from his cell, he built a hospice for strangers and pilgrims. There he personally tended to poor patients with his own hands. Many were cured of illnesses there. However, Fiacre never allowed women to enter the area of his hermitage. This was a strict rule observed by Irish monks, and Saint Fiacre kept this rule faithfully until his death. Mabillon and Du Plessis record that those who broke this rule were punished.

In 1620, a woman in Paris, believing that this rule did not apply to her, entered the prayer room, and it is said that she was struck with madness there. A nobleman and relative of Saint Fiacre, Saint Killian, visited him while returning from Rome and stayed under his guidance for a time. Influenced by Fiacre’s teaching, and with the permission of the bishops, Killian successfully preached the Gospel in neighboring dioceses, especially in Arras.

According to the accounts of Hector Boece, David Camerarius, and Bishop Leslie, Saint Fiacre was the eldest son of the king of Scotland during the reign of Clotaire II. When his country’s representatives came to France to ask him to return and take up the throne, he replied, “I have abandoned earthly gains in order to obtain the imperishable crown.” However, these events are not mentioned in the legendary biography of the saint. Saint Fiacre died on 30 August 670.

His body was buried in his own prayer room. As no disciples lived with him, Saint Faro’s monks appointed three priests to maintain the chapel at Breuil and to help the pilgrims. Saint Fiacre’s chapel became famous for continuous miracles.

In 1568, his relics were transferred to the cathedral in Meaux, though a portion remained at Breuil. The nobles of Florence received some relics in 1527 and again in 1695, and they enshrined them in a chapel built at Toppaia. Many churches in France are dedicated to Saint Fiacre, the patron of the province of Brie. His name has been celebrated in France for over a thousand years. Numerous miracles are said to have been performed through his intercession. The Bishop of Meaux, M. Seguier, and the Lord of Blois, John I, both gave official testimony of cures they received through Saint Fiacre’s intercession.
