Rosa, later known as Saint Euphrasia Eluvathingal, was born on 17 October 1877 in the Eluvathingal Cherpukkaran family in Kattur village, Thrissur district, to Antony and Kunjethy. Her mother’s deep devotion and faith in the Blessed Mother greatly influenced young Rosa. From the stories her mother told her—especially that of Saint Rose of Lima—Rosa, even as a child, developed a great desire to grow in virtue and to endure suffering for the sake of Jesus.

As Rosa grew, her interest in spiritual matters increased, and at the age of nine she decided to become a nun after receiving a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although her father strongly opposed it, Euphrasia continued her constant prayers, rosaries, and fasting. Her father’s heart was changed by Rosa’s persistent prayer and by the sudden death of her younger sister. In fact, it was her father himself who took her to join the Carmelite Convent at Koonammavu.

She suffered from various illnesses daily. Once, when she fell seriously ill, the other nuns in the convent decided to send her back home. However, after a vision of the Holy Family, she was miraculously healed, and she was allowed to remain in the convent. The Koonammavu convent, under the Vicariate of Thrissur (established in 1887), came under the Diocese of Ernakulam in the 1896 reorganization (Thrissur, Ernakulam, Changanassery). Mar John Menacherry, the first native bishop of the Thrissur Vicariate, sought to bring back to Thrissur those belonging to his diocese, and as a result, on 9 May 1897, the first Carmelite convent in the undivided Thrissur Diocese was established at Ambazhakad under the patronage of Saint Joseph.

That same year, Rosa became a postulant and took the name Sister Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On 10 January 1898, she received the religious habit. Despite serious illnesses and sufferings, she continually received strength from the help of the Blessed Mother. On 24 May 1900, St. Mary’s Convent in the Archdiocese of Thrissur was established, and on that very day, Euphrasia took her perpetual vows.

From 1904 to 1913, she was in charge of training the novices there, forming the future members of her congregation with great care. Her humility, piety, virtue, penance, and charity served as an exemplary model for them. Though she preferred a life of solitude, she was elected Superior of St. Mary’s Convent, Ollur, a position she held from 1913 to 1916. Her humility and devotion earned her the affectionate titles “The Praying Mother” from local people and “The Mobile Tabernacle” from the other sisters, for the divine presence within her radiated to those around her.

From the very beginning of her spiritual life, she had the blessing and spiritual guidance of Bishop John Menacherry, who instructed her to reveal to him every aspect of her spiritual life. He carefully preserved all her writings. When his successor, Mar George Alapatt, retired, he handed over these writings to the Superior of the Carmelite Convent in Thrissur, prophetically remarking, “You will need these someday.”

Euphrasia spent most of her time before the convent altar, becoming a great apostle of the Holy Eucharist and the Rosary. She completely surrendered herself to the Crucified Lord and continually received comfort from Him. It was her custom to express gratitude even for the smallest favors, saying, “I will never forget this—even after my death.”

She had a special love for the Holy Church and was deeply saddened by the various problems it faced. She offered her sufferings for the conversion of the schismatics and urged others to pray for them as well. She prayed constantly for the Church Fathers, bishops, and priests.

Having devoted her entire life to the service of God, Euphrasia passed away on 29 August 1952, surrendering herself to the will of God. Many miracles have been reported through her intercession. The first was the cure of Thomas Tharakan of Ancheri, Ollur, from cancer. Admitted to Jubilee Mission Medical College, Thrissur, Thomas was diagnosed with cancer, but a scan taken a week before the scheduled surgery revealed no sign of disease. His sister Rosie testified that this was the result of prayer to Euphrasia.

The second miracle concerned Jewel, a seven-year-old boy from Alur, Thrissur district, who suffered from throat cancer and had difficulty swallowing food. Doctors at Dhanya Hospital in Thrissur declared his condition incurable. His poor family had no option but prayer. His grandmother prayed fervently to Euphrasia, and when Dr. Shashikumar of Dhanya Hospital later examined him, the tumor had disappeared. Other doctors also examined him and confirmed that he had been cured without any medical intervention.

On 27 September 1986, the process for Euphrasia’s canonization began in Ollur. On 29 August 1987, she was declared a Servant of God. In 1990, her tomb was opened and her relics were transferred to St. Mary’s Convent. On 5 July 2002, Pope John Paul II declared Euphrasia Blessed. On 3 December 2006, she was elevated to the status of Venerable. On 23 April 2014, Pope Francis raised her to the ranks of the saints.
