Today we commemorate the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist. On June 24, the Church also celebrates the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. Among all the saints, it is only the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist whose birthdays are celebrated. For all other saints, we celebrate the feast day that commemorates their death.
Today’s Gospel describes the circumstances that led to the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. He had the courage to look King Herod in the face and tell him that it was wrong to unlawfully take Herodias, his brother’s wife, while her husband was still alive. Herodias, harboring resentment, planned to have John arrested and, through Herod, had him imprisoned. She then used the opportunity, through her daughter Salome, to have the saint beheaded.
Since the 4th century, the Church has observed the custom of commemorating the martyrdom of the one who came to prepare the way for Jesus. Saint John’s body was buried in Samaria. In 362, pagans attacked his tomb and burned his relics. Only a small portion could be saved by local monks, who later sent them to Saint Athanasius in Alexandria.
The saint’s head is venerated in several places. It is honored in the Dominican church in Breslau and in many other churches as well. The one who came to prepare the way for Jesus gave his life for Him. Those who imprisoned him did not ask him to deny Jesus, but rather to refrain from speaking the truth. Yet he spoke the truth and died for Jesus.
Because John shed his blood for the sake of truth, he truly died for Jesus. The strength, nobility, and greatness of Saint John the Baptist were evident in the joy with which he endured suffering. He proclaimed the freedom of heavenly peace. Nevertheless, the wicked bound him in chains. To someone like John, accepting temporary suffering for the sake of truth was not a difficult task, but rather something easily done and even desired, because he knew that eternal joy would be its reward.
