Saint Augustine was one of the most profound scholars of the ancient Christian world. He is known both as Augustine and Aurelius Augustinus. He was born on November 13, 354, in Tagaste, North Africa. While his mother, Saint Monica, was a devout believer, his father, Patricius, was a non-believer. Although Augustine had received a good Christian education, he had not yet been baptized. While studying law in Carthage, he became attracted to the Manichean doctrine and began living a sinful life, which deeply saddened his mother, Monica.

Desiring greatly to be with him, Monica was deceived by her son when he left for Rome. All she could do was weep and pray for him. Seeing her sorrow, a bishop once said to her, “The son of so many tears will not be lost.” Yet, the power of evil continued to lead Augustine into further moral decay.

Gradually, the constant prayers of Monica began to bear fruit. Augustine came to realize the emptiness of a life of pleasure and the depth of the human heart. He began to understand that worldly pleasures were merely small stones thrown into that deep abyss. He came to the realization that “the heart will remain restless until it rests in God.”

Through Monica’s tears and prayers, Augustine repented, and on Easter night in 387, he was baptized. In Milan, his mother rejoiced greatly to witness this greatest event in her son’s life. Augustine returned to Africa with his mother, but during the journey, at Ostia, his mother passed away, dying with the joy of knowing she had given her son a second birth.

In 388, he returned to Tagaste and lived a simple life with his friends. Later, after distributing all his possessions to the poor, Augustine was ordained a priest in Hippo in 391. In 394, he became the assistant to Bishop Valerius, and upon Valerius’ death, Augustine was consecrated Bishop of Hippo at the age of 41. He served as Bishop of Hippo from 396 to 430.

He was one of the most influential theologians of the Church. His knowledge was particularly great regarding the doctrines of the Holy Trinity, grace, and the Church. He was a good preacher, a skilled writer, and a man of profound spirituality. Among his writings, the most famous is The Confessions, which contains accounts of his life, his sins, his struggles, and his religious reflections.

Another renowned work of his is The City of God. His sermons were often based on the Gospel of Saint John and the Psalms. Augustine’s ecclesiastical life was marked by battles against heresies, in all of which he emerged victorious. His most notable triumph was over Pelagius, who denied the necessity of divine grace.

This victory earned him the title “Doctor of Grace.” In Christian art, Augustine is often depicted with a flaming heart, symbolizing the immense love of God that shone through his writings. The Augustinian monastic order follows Augustine’s monastic ideals and regards him as their spiritual father. Saint Augustine died in Hippo.
