August 27:

Saint Monica was born around the year 331 in Tagaste, North Africa. She is an example of those holy women who, through their quiet ways, influenced the early Church. Through her tears and prayers, she gave the Church Saint Augustine the Great, thereby securing for herself a place in the history of God’s kingdom on earth. According to The Confessions of St. Augustine, Monica was raised under the care of the same maidservant who had cared for her father. She was married to a pagan named Patricius. In addition to other faults of character, her husband was extremely hot-tempered. It is believed that the patience she displayed in living with him contributed greatly to her own extraordinary endurance.

Monica would only correct her husband after his anger had subsided. Furthermore, malicious servants would fill her mother-in-law’s ears with slander, turning her against Monica. Yet she faced all these obstacles with kindness and compassion. God blessed her with three children: Navigius, Perpetua, and Augustine.

It was in his youth that Augustine was baptized. It is possible, however, that Monica postponed his baptism because of his sinful way of life. When Augustine was nineteen, his father died. By that time, through her prayers and penance, Monica had already brought about her husband’s conversion. Yet, because of his many sins and his indulgent way of life, the young Augustine remained a constant source of grief to his mother. When all her tears and efforts seemed in vain, she even went so far as to forbid him from entering her home. But after a vision, she allowed him to return.

When Augustine planned to go to Rome, Monica decided to accompany him. However, by the time she arrived at the harbor, he had already boarded the ship. She later followed him and arrived in Milan, where Saint Ambrose welcomed her and congratulated Augustine for having such a mother. It was in Milan that she prepared the way for her son’s conversion. At last, the moment came when her tears were turned into joy—Augustine was baptized, and the long, tireless struggle of this holy mother came to an end.

While returning to Africa, Saint Monica died at Ostia at the age of sixty-six. In the biography of Saint Augustine, the account of her death is among the most touching and beautiful passages.
