August 26:

Saint Zephyrinus was born in Rome, the son of Habundius. According to information obtained from historians, after being freed from forced labor in the mines, Callixtus—who later became pope—dedicated himself to the service of the Church, and during that time Zephyrinus relied on him. Gradually, Zephyrinus appointed Callixtus as archdeacon and entrusted to him the care of the cemetery on the Appian Way, which was under the Church’s authority.

At that time, the Church was being shaken by heresies arising from various quarters. Zephyrinus, however, remained steadfast in the teachings handed down by the Apostles and protected the Church. One man named Theodotus, who had been expelled from the Church, began spreading his belief that Jesus was not truly the Son of God. Moreover, he established his own congregation and even appointed, on salary, a bishop named Natalius. Before this, Natalius had once suffered persecution for openly professing his faith in the true God.

According to tradition, since Jesus would not wish for anyone who had suffered for Him to be cast out of the Church, Natalius had a vision in which angels appeared to him and rebuked him for joining Theodotus. Enlightened by the truth, Natalius sought forgiveness from Saint Zephyrinus. Having shown deep repentance, Natalius was received back into the Church by the bishop.

Meanwhile, Praxeas, Noetus, and Sabellius came forward with the heresy known as Modalism. This matter came to the attention of Zephyrinus, who wasted no time in strongly refuting the heresy by citing the Apostolic teachings, thereby defending the Catholic Church from falling into its harm.

It is said that Saint Zephyrinus later attained the crown of martyrdom, and that his body was buried in the cemetery on the Appian Way.
