Saint Louis IX (1215–1270), who became King of France at the age of twelve, was guided into the heights of religious virtue by his mother, Blanche of Castile. Throughout his life, he maintained deep devotion to God. Even as a king, his conduct was that of a true saint. Louis dedicated his entire life to the welfare of his country and of the Christian world. He was also a great peacemaker—many kings often sought his help to settle their disputes. Possessing a humble heart, Saint Louis did not consider his royal position when aiding the poor, and he personally cared for lepers and other sick people.

The saint was deeply devoted to prayer and the reception of the Holy Eucharist, and he encouraged others to do the same. Courageous in battle and gracious in hospitality, Louis practiced fasting and a strict way of life. His politics were grounded in justice, holiness, and the pursuit of peace. Yet, his rule was far from weak; rather, it was an exemplary reign that would be looked up to for generations.

A great friend of religious orders and a great benefactor of the Church, Saint Louis IX died near Tunis during a Crusade for the liberation of the Holy City. The liturgical books record the following about him:

“After reigning for nearly twenty years, he contracted a severe illness, which led him to vow to undertake a Crusade for the liberation of the Holy City. Once he recovered, he received the Crusader’s cross from the Bishop of Paris and, in 1248, crossed the sea with a large army. Although Louis defeated his enemies in battle, a plague struck and claimed a large part of his army. In 1250, he was attacked and captured. The king was forced to make a peace treaty with the Saracens and was released, along with his army, upon payment of a large ransom. During the second Crusade, he succumbed to plague and died.”

A member of the Third Order of the Trinitarians, Louis was also a strong supporter of the Franciscan Order. His Catholic way of life and generous assistance greatly impressed Saint Bonaventure. About a decade before Louis’ death in Tunis, Saint Bonaventure, during a General Chapter of the Franciscans, proposed that a special day of prayer and devotion should be observed annually for the king.

Three years later, the chapter accepted this proposal, and shortly after Louis IX’s death, the Franciscan Order began promoting his canonization. As soon as he was declared a saint, both the Secular Franciscan Order and the Third Order Regular Franciscans honored him as their protector and intercessor.
