Saint Bartholomew, a learned man in the Scriptures, was a close friend of the Apostle Saint Philip. His mind was always open to the truth. Of his own accord, he came with Philip to see Jesus, and upon seeing Him, immediately recognized the truth that He was the Savior, the Son of God. On the first Pentecost day, Bartholomew was filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, after which he preached the Gospel in Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Armenia.

In the Gospel of Saint John, Saint Bartholomew is referred to by the name Nathanael. A native of Cana in Galilee, he was one of the first disciples chosen by Jesus. During Bartholomew’s first meeting with Jesus, the Lord said of him: “Behold! A true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.” After the Resurrection of Jesus, Saint Bartholomew was one of the few apostles who were privileged to witness the appearance of the Risen Savior at the Sea of Galilee (John 21:2). Following the Ascension of Jesus, Bartholomew preached the Gospel in Armenia, where he is said to have been martyred.

According to historical accounts, the saint’s skin was flayed from his body while he was still alive. The Armenians honor him as one of the apostles of their nation. Regarding the relics of the saint, the Martyrology states: “The saint’s holy body was first taken to the island of Lipari (north of Sicily), then to Benevento, and from there brought to an island in the Tiber River in Rome, where the faithful have continued to venerate it with great reverence.”

The Armenian Church preserves a national tradition that Saints Thaddeus Jude and Bartholomew came there in the early first century, preaching Christianity among those who worshipped the god Ahura Mazda. The new faith spread throughout the land, and later, in A.D. 302, the great missionary Saint Gregory baptized the King of Armenia, Tiridates the Great, along with many of his followers. Because King Tiridates was perhaps the first ruler to accept Christianity for his nation, the Armenians claim to be the world’s first Christian kingdom.
