The first “holy flower” that South America offered to the world was Saint Rose of Lima. She was born in 1586 in Lima, the capital of Peru. Her baptismal name was Isabel, but because of her beauty, everyone began calling her Rose. From childhood, she displayed extraordinary patience and endurance. Imitating the example of Saint Catherine of Siena, she joined the Dominican Third Order and dedicated herself to works of charity. Her life was one of extreme asceticism, filled with penance and endurance. Her desire was to evangelize the indigenous people.

Saint Martin de Porres and Saint John Macías were among her friends. She led a life founded on penance and virtue. At the age of five, she firmly resolved to preserve her purity for God.

Even as a young girl, she practiced austerities and fasts far beyond the ordinary. During the entire season of Lent, she would eat nothing at all, sustaining herself on just five lemons a day. In addition, she endured numerous temptations from the devil.

Alongside painful physical ailments, she also had to face opposition and scolding from her own family. Yet she accepted all of this joyfully, saying, “God takes care of me more than I deserve.” For nearly fifteen years, she bore severe spiritual trials and periods of solitude.

On August 24, 1617, her guardian angel of the Blessed Virgin led her to her heavenly Bridegroom. In 1671, Pope Clement X canonized Rose. In the papal bull of her canonization, the Pope declared:

“Since the discovery of Peru, there has never been another missionary who has stirred up such great popular fervor for penance.”
