In 1090, Saint Bernard was born near Dijon, France, as the third son of a noble Burgundian family. He received an excellent education, and at the age of twenty-two, he joined the Benedictine monastery at Cîteaux. He also inspired about thirty young men from noble families — including his own father and brother — to follow his example.
Two years later, together with a group of monks, he founded a monastery at Clairvaux, and in 1115 he was appointed its abbot. Saint Bernard was a skilled theologian, a counselor to kings, an adviser to popes, and above all, a worker of miracles. He established many monasteries. The monastic rules he implemented at Clairvaux later served as the model for around 163 monasteries during the Cistercian reform. Bernard’s disciple from Pisa later became Pope under the name Eugene III. The influence of Saint Bernard on the people of his time — as well as on kings and the clergy — was remarkable. He led a life that was deeply penitential and marked by great austerity.
Saint Bernard was filled with zeal in praising and worshipping God. He died at Clairvaux on August 20, 1153. He is considered the second founder of the Cistercian monastic order. Some of his sayings were later incorporated into the liturgy.
