Saint John Eudes, a French priest and founder of two religious congregations, was born in Ri, in the northern part of France.
Despite the harsh climate of the heresy of Jansenism that prevailed at the time, John made his First Holy Communion in his childhood. A true missionary, he was a great promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
John was educated in Paris and joined the religious congregation of the “Oratorians.” In 1625, at the age of twenty-four, he was ordained a priest. In the plague epidemics of 1627 and 1631, John took the initiative to care for plague victims in his diocese. In order to prevent his fellow priests from being infected, he lived in a large, empty wine cask placed in the middle of a wide field. At the age of thirty-two, he became a parish missionary. Known as an excellent preacher and confessor, he preached the Word of God in nearly a hundred parishes, often for weeks or months at a time.
He became convinced that special attention must be given to seminaries for the spiritual growth of priests. Having obtained permission from his superior general, his bishop, and a cardinal to begin this work, John later faced opposition from the newly appointed superior general. After much prayer and counsel, he decided to leave his priestly congregation.
In 1643, he founded the congregation of the “Eudists” (Society of Jesus and Mary). The main mission of this congregation was to give spiritual formation to priests, establish seminaries, and conduct evangelization missions among the people. Although this new initiative had the personal support of bishops, it soon faced strong opposition, especially from the Jansenist heretics and even from some of John’s former collaborators, posing serious threats to him.
Grieved by the plight of women trapped in prostitution who wished to escape their miserable lives, John set up temporary shelters for them, but these proved inadequate. He later founded the congregation of the “Sisters of Charity of the Refuge” for their care and rehabilitation.
Saint John Eudes was also a gifted writer. His main subjects were Jesus, as the source of divinity, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, as the model of Christian life. He died in Caen at the age of seventy-nine.
Because of his devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pope Pius XI proclaimed him the “Father of the liturgical devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.”
