August 18:

Saint Helena is believed to have been born in Bithynia, Asia Minor. One of the most significant beliefs held by the Church regarding Saint Helena is that she discovered the True Cross on which Jesus was crucified, in Jerusalem. To learn more about this, we must go back a bit into history.

Before the Jewish uprising, the Roman Emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117–138) renamed the region of Judea as “Syria Palaestina.”
He made Jerusalem his new capital city, and Jews were forbidden to enter it. Following the revolt of A.D. 70, Jerusalem had been reduced to a city of ruins, and Hadrian completely destroyed what remained. Both Judaism and Christianity were considered by him as religions to be suppressed.

To hinder the growth of Christianity, he leveled the top of Mount Calvary and built a temple to the pagan goddess Venus there. In addition, he had the site of Jesus’ tomb carved out and constructed a temple to the pagan god Jupiter Capitolinus on it. In reality, through these measures, he was unknowingly preserving the Christian holy places.

Years later, the famous Emperor Constantine rose to power. In A.D. 312, Maxentius launched an attack on Constantine with a large army. The confrontation took place at the Milvian Bridge over the River Tiber. Seeing Maxentius’ large army, Constantine was filled with fear, and his entire empire seemed on the brink of destruction.

In this situation, the emperor knelt down and prayed for victory. Suddenly, in the clear and tranquil sky, a cross made of light appeared, and beneath it were the words, “In this sign, you will conquer” (in hoc signo vinces). By divine instruction, Constantine had a cross made in the same form as he had seen and ordered it to be carried at the forefront of his army by a military commander. The whole army marched behind it to face the enemy. In that battle, they won a complete and astonishing victory.

From then on, the sign of the cross became a symbol of Christ, of the Roman Empire, and of military victory. In the very next year after gaining power, Constantine issued an edict granting legal status to Christianity. Around this time, his mother, Saint Helena, converted to Christianity. She found joy in serving God among the poor, despite her high position. Her extensive works of charity earned her the reputation of being the mother of the destitute and the suffering.

Around the year 324, at the age of eighty, with her son’s approval, Saint Helena set out for Palestine with the goal of finding the holy places. Her journey was driven by a fervent desire to discover the cross on which Jesus had died.

By the year 326, the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus was demolished, and excavations were carried out for further investigation. Before long, the remains of Jesus’ tomb were found, and a small church was built over it. Over the centuries, this church has undergone many restorations and is now the present Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

After much labor, three crosses were found on Calvary, along with inscriptions and nails recorded in the Gospels. However, it was not clear which one was the cross on which Jesus had died. Following the advice of Bishop Macarius, Helena decided to touch each of the three crosses to the body of a woman who was gravely ill with no hope of recovery.

When the third cross was placed upon her, she immediately rose up and was completely healed. Overjoyed, the empress built a church on Calvary and placed the cross there. Soon afterward, Helena returned to Rome. She is believed to have died in A.D. 330.
