In the seventh year of his reign, Huneric, the Arian king of Africa, issued a new decree against the Catholic faithful. The essence of the decree was that all monasteries and churches were to be destroyed. In the province of Byzacena, near Capsa, there was a monastery with about seven monks. They were summoned to Carthage. Liberatus was their abbot, Boniface was a deacon, Servus and Rusticus were sub-deacons, and Rogatus, Septimus, and Maximus were monks.
At first, Huneric tried to entice them with many promises. But the courageous and God-fearing men replied:
“One faith, one God, one baptism. Do with our bodies whatever you please, and keep for yourself all the perishable wealth you have promised us.”
Since they stood firm in their faith in the Triune God and in the one baptism, they were bound with heavy iron rods and shut in a dark prison. However, the local Christian faithful bribed the prison guards and persuaded them to allow daily and nightly visits to the saints, receiving counsel from them. The saints encouraged one another to face death bravely for Christ.
When the king heard of this, he ordered them to be tortured with instruments of cruelty never before seen and to be bound with even heavier iron rods. Soon afterward, he commanded that they be placed in an old ship and set on fire at sea.
Amid the insults and mockery of the Arian heretics along the way, the martyrs proceeded joyfully toward the seashore. The executioners made special efforts to win over the youngest, Maximus; but the God who makes even the tongues of little children proclaim His name gave him the courage to resist their temptations. He firmly declared:
“I can never be separated from that divine abbot and my brothers with whom I have lived a life of repentance, striving for eternal glory.”
Following this, the seven were placed into an old vessel filled with dry kindling and bound to wooden posts.
Although the fire was lit many times, it was extinguished almost immediately each time. All attempts to set the vessel ablaze failed. Enraged, the king ordered that their skulls be crushed with oars, which was done.
Their bodies were thrown into the sea, but—unusually—they were washed ashore along that coast. The local faithful took the saints’ bodies and reverently buried them near the church of Saint Celerinus in Bigua.
These saints were martyred in the year 483.
