August 16:

Saint Roch is a saint greatly venerated in both France and Italy. No fully authoritative historical record of the saint is available. According to the information we do have, Saint Roch was born in Montpellier, France, the son of the governor of the city. When he was twenty years old, he became an orphan.

At one point, the saint undertook a pilgrimage to Rome. There, he saw many people suffering from the plague and was deeply moved. Saint Roch then dedicated himself to caring for plague victims in Italy. While in Piacenza, the saint himself contracted the plague but later recovered.

According to the historian Maldura, when Saint Roch fell ill and was no longer able to help others, he crawled into a nearby forest. It is said that in that forest, a dog would regularly lick and clean his wounds. The saint bore his intense sufferings with patience and joy. Eventually, God was pleased with him and healed him. Many miraculous healings occurred through him along the way. Afterwards, Saint Roch returned to Montpellier, where he led a monastic life filled with deep devotion, charity, and repentance.

Upon his return to Montpellier, his uncle—who was also the governor—suspected him of being a spy disguised as a pilgrim and had him imprisoned. The governor did not realize he was his own nephew. Saint Roch, for his part, endured the situation patiently without revealing his true identity. While in prison, the saint died. It was only later that the governor realized, through the cross-shaped birthmark on the saint’s chest, that the prisoner had been the former governor’s own son.

According to another biographer’s account, Saint Roch was arrested in Angers, Lombardy, on suspicion of being a spy, and it was there that he died.

Saint Roch is also said to have died in Montpellier. In 1485, his body was transferred from Montpellier to Venice, where it was reverently enshrined in a beautiful church. However, some relics of the saint are also preserved in Rome’s Altar of the Holy Cross and in other places.

After the saint’s death, numerous miracles were reported through his intercession, and public devotion to him grew and spread widely. During times of epidemics, his name is invoked for protection. In Italy, he is known as Rocco, and in Spain as Roque.
