(Falling Asleep (Dormitio) of the mother of God)

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a dogma of the Catholic Church. Through this proclamation, the Pope affirmed the belief that at the end of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. Indeed, this belief is part of the deposit of faith that has come down to us from the Apostles.

The central point of the Pope’s explanation was the fact that Mary’s body and soul were taken into the glory of heaven. With this, an ancient belief became Catholic doctrine, and the Assumption was proclaimed as a truth revealed by God.

The Feast of the Assumption is the oldest feast in honor of the Blessed Mother. However, it is not known exactly when this feast was first celebrated. It is believed to have originated around the time the Roman Emperor Constantine restored Jerusalem as a holy city (c. 285–337).

Around 135 A.D., Emperor Hadrian (76–138) had destroyed the city and rebuilt it in honor of Jupiter. For about two centuries thereafter, the city remained a pagan city. During this time, all traces of the memory of Jesus were obliterated, and the places sanctified by the Lord’s life, death, and resurrection were transformed into pagan temples.

After the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built in 336, all those holy places were restored, and the people of Jerusalem began to celebrate the memorials of our Lord there.
One such early Christian memorial centered on Mary’s Tomb on Mount Zion, where the ancient Christian community lived. It was believed that Mary entered into eternal rest there. At that time, this was celebrated as the memorial of Mary, which later evolved into the Feast of the Assumption.

At first, the memorial of Mary was recorded only in Palestine, but later the Emperor ordered that the feast be observed in all churches throughout the Eastern provinces.

In the 7th century, the feast was celebrated in Rome under the title “The Falling Asleep (Dormitio) of the Mother of God.” Since it contained far more than the remembrance of Mary’s death, its name soon changed to “The Assumption of Mary.” This feast proclaims that the Blessed Mother was taken up to heaven, body and soul. This belief is as ancient as the time of the Apostles.

From the beginning, it was clear that no bodily relics of the Blessed Virgin Mary were ever venerated. The only thing known was the tomb at the edge of Jerusalem where she was believed to have died. This site soon became a place of pilgrimage. Today, a Benedictine Abbey called the Dormition of Mary stands there.

When the Council of Chalcedon met in Constantinople in 451, attended by bishops from all over the Mediterranean world, Emperor Marcian requested the Patriarch of Jerusalem to bring Mary’s relics to the capital for safekeeping. When her tomb was opened, however, it was found empty. The Patriarch informed the Emperor that the Apostles had concluded that Mary had been taken up into heaven, body and soul.

In the 8th century, Saint John of Damascus, famous for offering the Divine Liturgy at the holy sites of Jerusalem, expressed the Church’s faith in the Assumption at Mary’s tomb:

“Although the body was laid to rest as is proper, it was neither found in the same condition nor did it undergo corruption. You were taken to your heavenly dwelling, O Mother, O Queen, you who are truly the Mother of God.”

Every feast of Mary points to the mystery of her life and her role in the work of salvation. Since it would be unfitting for the body that gave life to the Son of God to undergo decay, the Assumption completed God’s plan for Mary.

The Feast of the Assumption turns our eyes toward the path to which we are also called when our mortal life ends. It reminds us to look toward immortality. This feast gives us the hope that, after our life’s end, we too will be able to follow the Blessed Mother.
