Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish priest imprisoned during World War II who attained the crown of martyrdom. He was born on January 8, 1894, in a small village in Poland, and his baptismal name was Raymond Kolbe. In 1910, dedicating himself completely to God, he joined the Franciscan Order. Later, he was sent to Rome, where in 1918 he was ordained a priest.
In 1919, returning to Poland, Fr. Maximilian, filled with deep love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, devoted himself to the promotion of the Militia of the Immaculata—an organization founded on October 16, 1917, in honor of the Immaculate Mother.
In 1927, he established a spiritual center near Warsaw called the City of the Immaculate (Niepokalanów). In its early days, the City of the Immaculate had only eighteen friars, but by 1939 it had grown to about 650 members, becoming the largest Catholic religious house in the world. Through his zealous preaching and writings, the saint carried out numerous missionary works in Europe and Asia.
The friars there made use of modern printing technology as a powerful means to spread Marian messages. This allowed them to publish numerous religious stories and spiritual articles. They produced a daily newspaper with about 230,000 subscribers and a monthly magazine with over one million subscribers. Fr. Kolbe also established a small radio station and even prepared plans for starting a film studio. Truly, he was an apostle of modern mass media. In 1930, he founded another City of the Immaculate in Nagasaki, Japan.
He was a theologian with innovative insights. His understanding of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God anticipated the Marian theology later developed at the Second Vatican Council. Moreover, the Church’s awareness that the Blessed Mother is the Mediatrix of all graces of the Triune God and the Advocate of the People of God was deepened through the saint’s insights.
In 1941, during World War II, the Nazis imprisoned him in the Auschwitz concentration camp. There, when a man—a husband and father—was condemned to death by starvation, Fr. Maximilian volunteered to take his place. Though the Nazis starved him, he did not die from hunger; eventually, on August 14, 1941, they killed him by injecting him with a lethal dose of poison.
On October 10, 1982, Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian Kolbe as a saint and proclaimed him a “Martyr of Charity.” Saint Maximilian Kolbe is venerated as the patron of journalists, families, prisoners, those who fight for truth, and those enslaved by addictions.
