1599-ല്‍ ഫ്ലാണ്ടേഴ്സില്‍ ബെല്‍ജിയത്തിലെ ഒരു ചെരുപ്പ് നിര്‍മ്മാതാവിന്റെ അഞ്ച് മക്കളില്‍ മൂത്തമകനായിട്ടാണ് ജോണ്‍ ബെര്‍ക്കുമാന്‍സ് ജനിച്ചത്. ചെറുപ്പത്തില്‍ തന്നെ ഒരു പുരോഹിതനാവുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു ജോണിന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം. ജോണിന് 13 വയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ മാലിന്‍സിലെ കത്തീഡ്രലിലെ കാനന്‍മാരില്‍ ഒരാളുടെ വീട്ടു ജോലിക്കാരനായി ജോണ്‍ സേവനം ചെയ്തു. ജോണിന്റെ മാതാവിന്റെ മരണത്തിനു ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവും രണ്ട് സഹോദരന്‍മാരും ആത്മീയജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിച്ചു. 1615-ല്‍ ജോണ്‍ അവിടെ പുതുതായി ആരംഭിച്ച ജെസ്യൂട്ട് സഭക്കാരുടെ കോളേജില്‍ ചേര്‍ന്നു.
ഒരു സമര്‍ത്ഥനായ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിയായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം മറ്റുള്ള വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്ക് അവരുടെ നേതാവിനെപോലെയായിരുന്നു. 1616-ല്‍ ജോണ്‍ മാലിന്‍സിലെ ജെസ്യൂട്ട് സഭയില്‍ നോവീഷ്യെറ്റ് ആയി ചേരുകയും ഫാദര്‍ ആന്റോയിന്‍ സുക്കെറ്റ് എന്ന ആത്മീയ പിതാവിന്റെ കീഴില്‍ സേവനം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. വിശുദ്ധ കുര്‍ബ്ബാനയോടും, ദൈവ മാതാവിനോടും വളരെ അഗാധമായ ഭക്തിയായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധന്‍ കാത്തു സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 1618-ല്‍ തത്വശാസ്ത്ര പഠനത്തിനായി വിശുദ്ധന്‍ റോമിലേക്ക് അയക്കപ്പെട്ടു. പൗരോഹിത്യ പട്ടസ്വീകരണത്തിനു ശേഷം യേശുവിനു വേണ്ടി രക്തസാക്ഷിത്വം വരിക്കുക എന്ന ആഗ്രഹത്തോട് കൂടി സൈന്യത്തിലെ ചാപ്ലിന്‍ ആകുവാനാണ് വിശുദ്ധന്‍ അപേക്ഷിച്ചത്.
വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ശുഷ്കാന്തിയും, ഭക്തിയും കാരണം അദ്ദേഹം പരക്കെ അറിയപ്പെടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങളില്‍ പോലും പരിപൂര്‍ണ്ണത ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്ന ആളായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധ ജോണ്‍ ബര്‍ക്ക്മാന്‍സ്. 1619 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും റോമിലെ കഠിനമായ ചൂട് വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ആരോഗ്യത്തെ ബാധിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി. ക്രമേണ വിശുദ്ധന്റെ ആരോഗ്യം ക്ഷയിച്ചു. എന്താണ് വിശുദ്ധന്റെ രോഗകാരണമെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയുവാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ കുഴങ്ങി. ഏതാണ്ട് രണ്ടു വര്‍ഷത്തോളം വിശുദ്ധന്‍ നിരന്തരമായി രോഗത്തിന്റെ പിടിയിലായിരുന്നു. അവസാനം 1621 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 13ന് തന്റെ 22-മത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ വിശുദ്ധ ജോണ്‍ ബര്‍ക്ക്മാന്‍സ് സമാധാനപൂര്‍ണ്ണമായി കര്‍ത്താവില്‍ അന്ത്യനിദ്ര പ്രാപിച്ചു.
1865-ല്‍ പിയൂസ്‌ ഒമ്പതാമന്‍ പാപ്പാ വിശുദ്ധനെ വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ടവനായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. 1888-ല്‍ ലിയോ പതിമൂന്നാമന്‍ പാപ്പായാണ് ജോണ്‍ ബെര്ക്ക്മാന്സിനെ വിശുദ്ധനായി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നത്. റോമില്‍ വിശുദ്ധ അലോഷ്യസ്‌ ഗോണ്‍സാഗയെ അടക്കം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ ഇഗ്നേഷ്യസ്‌ ദേവാലയത്തില്‍ തന്നെയാണ് വിശുദ്ധ ജോണ്‍ ബെര്‍ക്ക്മാന്‍സിനേയും അടക്കം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. അള്‍ത്താര ശുശ്രൂഷകരുടെ മദ്ധ്യസ്ഥനായി വിശുദ്ധ ജോണ്‍ ബെര്ക്ക്മാന്സിനെ തിരുസഭ ആദരിച്ചു വരുന്നു.
In 1599, in Flanders, Belgium, John Berchmans was born as the eldest of five children to a shoemaker. From a young age, John’s desire was to become a priest. When he was 13 years old, he served as a domestic helper in the home of one of the canons of the cathedral in Mechelen. After the death of John’s mother, his father and two brothers also entered religious life. In 1615, John enrolled in the newly established Jesuit college there.
A capable student, he was like a leader among the other students. In 1616, John joined the Jesuit novitiate in Mechelen, serving under his spiritual father, Fr. Antoine Sucquet. He maintained a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1618, he was sent to Rome to study philosophy. After receiving the clerical tonsure, John applied to become a military chaplain, with the hope of attaining martyrdom for Christ.
Due to his gentleness and piety, he began to be well known. St. John Berchmans was a person who desired perfection even in small matters. By 1619, the intense heat of Rome began to affect his health. Gradually, his condition worsened. The doctors, unable to identify the cause of his illness, were perplexed. For nearly two years, he remained constantly under the grip of sickness. Finally, on August 13, 1621, at the age of 22, St. John Berchmans peacefully entered eternal rest in the Lord.
In 1865, Pope Pius IX declared him Blessed, and in 1888, Pope Leo XIII canonized John Berchmans as a saint. He is buried in the Church of St. Ignatius in Rome, where St. Aloysius Gonzaga is also entombed. The Church honors St. John Berchmans as the patron of altar servers.
