In the fifth century, a large monastery was built on the coast of what is now Provence in southern France. It was known as the Lérins Monastery. The abbot of the monastery at that time was Porcarius. By the eighth century, it is believed that the Lérins monastic community consisted of around five hundred people, including monks, novices, and young men aspiring to become monks.
Around the year 732, Abbot Porcarius had a vision. In this vision, it was revealed to him that cruel barbarians were planning to attack the monastery. Without delay, Saint Porcarius gathered his students and about thirty-six young monks, placed them in a boat, and sent them to safety. Since there was no other boat available, he gathered the rest of the brethren around him. None of them complained about not being rescued in that boat. Instead, they prayed together to God for courage and asked for the grace to forgive their enemies.
Soon after, the cruel Saracens landed their ships on that shore. Just as Abbot Porcarius had foretold, they launched an attack against the poor monks. Filled with faith, the monks prayed and encouraged one another to face death bravely for the sake of Jesus. Without any mercy, the ruthless attackers rushed upon their victims, killing all but four of them, and taking those four away as slaves. In this way, Saint Porcarius and the other monks of the Lérins Monastery became brave martyrs for Jesus.
