August 11:

Saint Clare was the first nun to lead a life of perfect poverty according to the teaching of Saint Francis of Assisi. She was born on July 16, 1194, in Assisi, Italy. Saint Francis of Assisi appointed her as the abbess of a community of nuns in a small convent at San Damiano.

The Daily Office says of her:

“Following the example of Saint Francis, she distributed all her possessions to the poor. Withdrawing from the noise and bustle of this world, she lived in a church in the countryside. On March 18, 1212, there Saint Francis himself cut her hair and gave her the religious habit. Clare was eighteen years old at the time. She then stayed at the church of Saint Damian, where God gave her a few holy companions.”

Under the guidance of Saint Francis, she established a community of nuns and served as their superior. For about forty-two years, she led her fellow sisters with great zeal and wisdom. With the approval of Pope Innocent IV, she and her community lived a life of perfect poverty. Saint Clare completely followed the example of Saint Francis of Assisi.

For nearly forty-two years she fulfilled this mission faithfully. In the Franciscan tradition, she founded a religious community for women called the “Order of Poor Ladies.” After Clare’s death, the community she had founded was renamed the “Order of Saint Clare” in her honor. Today, they are also known as the “Poor Clares.” The rule of life for this community was drawn up by Saint Clare herself. They followed a lifestyle far more austere than most other communities of nuns—walking barefoot, sleeping directly on the ground, and embracing poverty as the foundation of their lives.

Once, Saracens came with the intention of attacking her convent. Though she was ill at the time, Saint Clare, holding the vessel containing the Blessed Sacrament, prayed:

“My Lord, do not hand over the souls of those who praise You into the hands of these beasts. You have redeemed us with Your precious Blood, so protect Your handmaids.”

As she prayed, she heard a voice say:

“I will always protect you.”

Immediately, the Saracens fled.

Saint Clare suffered from illness for about twenty-seven years. She died on August 11, 1253. Two years after her death, she was canonized. Saint Clare was a flower blooming in the garden of Saint Francis, who lived in perfect poverty. Though poor in worldly goods, she was rich in her total poverty. She may be described as a perfect example of Jesus, who was poor from the manger to the cross. The example of Saint Clare helps us discover spirituality in Christian poverty.
