August 10:

Saint Lawrence, a young deacon and courageous martyr, was among the most highly venerated saints in the ancient Roman Church. In the Roman calendar of saints’ feast days, the feast of Saint Lawrence ranks immediately after those of Saints Peter and Paul. Although no completely authoritative accounts of Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom are available, there is credible evidence regarding his sufferings.

According to tradition, Lawrence was a disciple of Pope Sixtus II, who loved him more for his innocence than for his special talents. It was for this reason that the Pope appointed him one of the seven deacons and elevated him to the rank of archdeacon. This gave Lawrence the duty of service at the altar, standing by the Pope whenever he celebrated the Holy Eucharist. In addition, Lawrence was entrusted with the care of the Church’s property and the responsibility of helping the poor.

During the persecution under Emperor Valerian (253–260), Pope Sixtus II was arrested. Burning with the desire to join his spiritual father in martyrdom, Lawrence said to the Pope:

“Father, where are you going without your son? O holy priest, where are you hastening without your deacon? You have never offered the sacred mysteries without an assistant. How is it that I have fallen out of your favor? On what grounds do you judge me unfaithful to my office? Was it to prove that you chose a useless servant for the care of the Church’s treasures that you put me to the test again? Until now you have trusted me through the Blood of the Lord which has been entrusted to me by you.”

Hearing these words, the Pope replied:

“My son, I am not abandoning you, but a greater trial in the faith of the Lord awaits you. Since I am an old and weak man, God shows mercy to me. But a far more glorious victory is reserved for you. Do not weep; in three days you will follow me.”

After these comforting words, the Pope instructed him to distribute all the remaining treasures of the Church to the poor.

While carrying out his spiritual father’s order at the home of a Roman citizen, Lawrence was approached by a blind man named Crescentius, who begged to be healed. The holy deacon made the sign of the cross over him and restored his sight. Because of Lawrence’s association with Pope Sixtus, the authorities realized that he was the keeper of the Church’s treasures. They arrested him and placed him under the guard of Hippolytus.

While in prison, Lawrence healed Lucillus, another blind man, and many other blind people. Moved by this, Hippolytus converted to the Catholic faith and later became a martyr himself. Ordered by the authorities to hand over the Church’s treasures, Lawrence asked for two days to prepare. This request was granted. Lawrence then gathered all the poor and sick whom he had helped and brought them to Hippolytus’s house.

He led them before the judge and said: “Here are the treasures of the Church!”

Enraged, the authorities subjected him to brutal tortures—he was scourged with whips and struck with sharp metal plates, among other things. Even in the midst of these torments, the saint prayed: “Lord Jesus, God from God, have mercy on your servant.” Witnesses say that many who saw this converted to the Christian faith, and a soldier named Romanus testified that he saw an angel wiping the saint’s wounds with a soft cloth.

That night, Lawrence was again dragged before the judge and threatened with death. But without fear he replied:

“I honor only my God and serve Him alone; therefore I do not fear your tortures. This night will shine as brightly as day, without any darkness.”

Then they placed him on an iron grid over burning coals. After half of his body had been roasted, Lawrence said jokingly to his executioners:

“This side is done; turn me over and cook the other.”

They did so, and then the saint said:

“I am fully cooked now; you may eat me if you wish.”

Finally, he offered thanks to God, saying:

“Lord, I thank You for allowing me to come to You.”

Saint Lawrence was martyred on the Viminal Hill, and his body was buried on the Tiburtine Way. Later, during the time of Emperor Constantine, a church was built over the site of his burial.
