In 1891, Saint Teresa Benedicta was born into an eminent Jewish family in Breslau, Poland, which is now known as Wrocław. Her early name was Edith Stein. She became known as a philosopher of great renown due to the profound scholarship she acquired through studies at leading German universities. During her adolescence, Edith abandoned her Jewish faith. While a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by “phenomenology,” a branch of philosophy that studies personal experiences and consciousness in a systematic way. Under the mentorship of the prominent phenomenologist Edmund Husserl, Teresa advanced in her studies and, in 1916, earned her doctorate in philosophy.
Until 1922, Teresa served as a university lecturer, after which she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer. However, due to Nazi pressure, she was forced to give up her position at an educational institution in Munich. This brilliant philosopher, who had lost her faith in God at the age of fourteen, once came across the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila. This event completely transformed her life and marked the beginning of a new spiritual journey that culminated in her baptism. In 1933, following the example of Saint Teresa of Ávila, she became a Carmelite nun and took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
After residing at the Cologne Carmel from 1934 to 1938, the saint moved to the Carmelite convent in Echt, Netherlands. In 1940, the Nazis occupied that country. As retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the Nazis ordered the arrest of all Dutch Jews who had converted to Christianity. In 1942, along with many other Catholics of Jewish heritage, the saint and her companions were arrested by the Nazi regime, loaded into a cattle train, and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Saint Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, who was also a Catholic, were among them. Both were killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz on August 9, 1942.
