August 07:

(Congregation of Clerics Regular of the Divine Providence)

Saint Cajetan was born on October 1, 1480. Together with Paul IV—who was destined by God to become Pope in the future—he founded the religious order known as the Clerics Regular. The foundational rule of this congregation was unwavering fidelity to God. Due to his intense zeal for the salvation of souls, Saint Cajetan became known as the “Hunter of Souls.” He was one of the co-founders of the religious order known as the Theatines (Congregation of Clerics Regular of the Divine Providence). Even as a young man, Saint Cajetan was appointed to a prominent position in Rome by Pope Julius II.

However, after receiving priestly ordination in 1516, he voluntarily resigned from that papal post and fully dedicated himself to the service of God. With great enthusiasm, he ministered among God’s people, even going so far as to care for many sick individuals with his own hands. This same zeal was evident in his tireless work for the salvation of souls. In order to raise the spiritual discipline of the clergy, he founded the religious congregation of the Clerics Regular in 1524. Members of this order had no interest in material possessions whatsoever.

They would not accept any payment or reward from the faithful; instead, they lived entirely on whatever people freely gave them. Because of this, they relied heavily on divine providence. Saint Cajetan, who had immense devotion to God, would often spend as many as eight hours a day in prayer. He was an active participant in the liturgical reforms carried out under Pope Clement VII.

It is said that during the Christmas celebrations at the Church of St. Mary of the Crib, Saint Cajetan had the blessed fortune of receiving the infant Jesus from the hands of the Blessed Virgin Mary and holding Him in his own arms. In 1527, when the troops of Emperor Charles V attacked and plundered Rome, the soldiers imprisoned and tortured Saint Cajetan because he had refused to surrender the money kept in the church meant for helping the poor. Grieved and troubled by all this suffering, Saint Cajetan eventually fell ill.

He died on August 7, 1547, in Naples, entering into eternal rest.
