This feast began to spread in the Western world during the 11th century. It was officially included in the Roman calendar in 1457 as a commemoration of the Christian victory over Islam at the Battle of Belgrade. Prior to that, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord was celebrated only within the liturgical traditions of the Syriac, Byzantine, and Coptic churches. The Transfiguration of the Lord reveals the divine majesty of Christ and His elevation into heavenly glory. It reflects the splendor of heaven, where we are granted the grace to behold the face of God. By God’s indescribable mercy, we too are included in His promise of eternal life.

About a year before His suffering on Golgotha, while He was in Galilee, Jesus took Peter, and the sons of Zebedee—James and John—up to a mountain. According to tradition, it was Mount Tabor, a beautiful, tree-covered hill in the middle of the Galilean plain. It was at this very place that God, in His human form, manifested His full divine glory.

While Jesus was praying, a divine light surrounded His entire body. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became dazzling white, like snow. At that moment, Moses and the prophet Elijah appeared and stood on either side of Jesus, and the three apostles saw them. The apostles also heard Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus about the sufferings He would endure and His death in Jerusalem.

The apostles, having witnessed this extraordinary vision, were overwhelmed with joy. Peter exclaimed, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will make three tents here—one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” As Peter was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud descended from heaven and enveloped them. They heard a voice from the cloud saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” Hearing this voice, the apostles were struck with great fear and fell to the ground. But Jesus came to them, touched them, and said, “Rise, do not be afraid.” Immediately they got up and saw only Jesus in His usual appearance.

This vision occurred at night. Early the next morning, as they descended the mountain, Jesus instructed them not to tell anyone about what they had seen until after He had risen from the dead. Through this Transfiguration, Jesus was briefly entering the state of glory that He would permanently attain after the Resurrection Sunday. The radiance of His divine nature and the richness of His spirit overflowed through His body, making His garments shine as white as snow.

The purpose of this Transfiguration was to encourage and strengthen His disciples, who had become distressed when He foretold His passion and death. Through this event, the apostles came to understand that Christ’s salvific mission included both the Cross and glory. The Feast of the Transfiguration reminds us that only through suffering with Jesus can we enter into His glory.
