Saint Oswald was an Anglo-Saxon king of Northumbria. The information about King Oswald, who was a devout Christian, comes from the historian Bede. The saint clearly understood that there was no greater purpose than leading his people into the spiritual kingdom of God, and he labored tirelessly so that they might attain eternal glory alongside him. It was during this time that the cruel and tyrannical Cadwalla launched an invasion of the Northumbrian provinces. He burned most of the regions to ashes and put all the people to the sword.
In response, Saint Oswald gathered whatever army he could and, relying on Jesus, courageously marched to confront the powerful enemy. He faced his enemies at a place called Denisburn. As they approached the enemy camp, the devout king quickly made a cross out of wood. After erecting it on the battlefield, he told his soldiers: “Let us all kneel and pray together to our mighty God, so that He may know we are fighting to save our lives and our kingdom.” Upon hearing his command, all the soldiers earnestly engaged in prayer. The merciful God granted Oswald’s much smaller army a miraculous victory over Cadwalla’s great forces, and Cadwalla was killed in that battle.
The place where the saint planted the cross later came to be known as “Heaven’s Field.” According to Bede, before this, there had been no known church or cross in the kingdom of Bernicia. That cross later became very famous, and many miracles were reported to have taken place around it. Even before Bede wrote the saint’s biography, a church had already been built there. Following the victory, Saint Oswald gave thanks to God and implemented various welfare programs in his dominion. He also worked to spread devotion to Christ in those regions.
To this end, the saint requested the king and bishops of Scotland, through his governors, to send a bishop and helpers to his kingdom. A monk from the renowned monastery of Iona named Aidan was chosen for this mission. Saint Oswald granted the island of Lindisfarne to Aidan as his episcopal center. It was Oswald himself who translated and explained Aidan’s sermons and teachings to the people, as Aidan was Irish.
The saint constructed many churches and monasteries throughout his kingdom. While ruling over his temporal kingdom, he also diligently prepared spiritually for the eternal one. According to Bede, he was the ruler of a vast empire. The abbot of the monastery of Iona even referred to him as the “Emperor of Britain.” Despite being such a great king, the saint never abandoned his humility.
On one occasion, while he was sitting at his dining table, he was informed by the official in charge of almsgiving that many poor people were standing at the palace gates seeking help. Immediately, the saint took a large silver dish full of food and instructed that it be distributed among them.
After ruling his kingdom with great distinction for about eight years, the pagan king Penda of Mercia launched an attack on Oswald’s territories. It was Penda who had also killed Oswald’s uncle, the devout King Edwin. Saint Oswald confronted Penda with a small army and was killed in that battle. He was martyred on August 5, 642, at the age of thirty-eight, at a place called Maserfield, which is believed to be in present-day Minwick in Lancashire.
When he was surrounded by enemy troops, the saint prayed, “O God, may You have mercy on their souls.” This prayer later became widely known and quoted. After the cruel Penda killed the saint, he cut off his head and arms and mounted them on poles. The following year, Oswald’s brother, who succeeded him, retrieved those relics, brought them to his palace, and sent the head to Lindisfarne, where it was later buried alongside the relics of Saint Cuthbert.
