In 1786, Saint John Vianney was born in Dardilly, France. It was a time when, during the French Revolution, religious schools and churches had been closed. Furthermore, those who offered refuge to priests were imprisoned. However, at the Vianney family’s farm in Dardilly, they provided shelter to priests. One of those priests was the one who prepared the saint for his First Holy Communion.
On one occasion, while tending his father’s sheep, John made a statue of the Blessed Mother out of clay. He hid it in the hollow of an old tree and made this prayer: “Dear Mary, I love you very much; please bring Jesus to His temple very soon!”
While visiting his aunt in Écully, John heard her speak highly of the parish priest there. He decided that this priest’s guidance would be important in discerning his vocation to the priesthood. Though John had many shortcomings in speech and education, the priest evaluated him seriously. However, John was unable to answer any of the scientific questions the priest asked.
But when theological questions were posed, John’s face lit up. He answered all the religious questions correctly, even beyond what was expected of someone his age. Joyful, the priest took this as a sign from Heaven and prophesied, “You will become a priest!”
Despite having many limitations in terms of ability and education, John Vianney was ordained a priest in 1815. After spending about three years in Écully, he was appointed the parish priest of Ars.
It was in Ars that the saint spent forty-two years of his life in prayer, endurance, and missionary work. He became renowned in the Christian world for his success in leading numerous souls to the right path. As a good pastor, John Vianney attracted large crowds who came to hear his religious instructions. He lived a life of deep asceticism. People from all walks of life came to him seeking his counsel.
The spiritual transformation he brought about in his community and surroundings caused his priestly life to gain international attention. Serving tirelessly both sinners and the poor, Saint John Vianney died in Ars. It was Pope Pius X who declared John Vianney Blessed, and Pope Pius XI who canonized him as a saint. The Church honors him as the patron saint of parish priests.
