Peter Julian Eymard was born on February 4, 1811, in La Mure, France. The one whom the saint loved most and who had the greatest influence on his life was “Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.” When Peter was five years old, one day he went missing. His sister and half-sister became anxious and searched for him everywhere. Eventually, they found him in front of the parish church altar. His simple reply to their anxious inquiry was, “I was listening to Jesus.”
Becoming a priest was Peter’s life goal. However, after the death of his other children, Peter’s father could not bear the thought of his only remaining son becoming a priest. Ignoring his parents’ opposition, Peter’s first attempt to enter the priesthood failed. Due to illness, he had to return home from the seminary.
After the death of his father, Peter made a second attempt and was ordained a priest on July 20, 1834, at the age of 23, for the Diocese of Grenoble. Even during his seminary days and afterward, Peter Eymard had a deep yearning for spirituality and an immense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He decided to embrace religious life. On August 20, 1839, Father Eymard joined the “Society of Mary” (the Marists). He was frequently engaged in pilgrimages to churches dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
Even amid his ill health, the saint carried out his evangelical and administrative duties with great enthusiasm. A good teacher and an energetic preacher, he formed many devout communities. He had a prophetic presence both within his congregation and among his superiors. Father Eymard was highly successful in promoting devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. On May 25, 1845, the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), an event occurred that transformed his life.
While participating in a Eucharistic procession and celebrating Holy Mass at St. Paul’s Church in Lyon, he felt a profound attraction to Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament. Subsequently, he made a firm decision to spread the love of the Lord throughout the world and to proclaim Jesus and the Blessed Sacrament. He prayed intensely for many years toward this goal. His superior and founder of the Marist congregation, Father Jean-Claude Colin, asked him to prepare a rule of life for their newly formed third order. But when Father Eymard requested permission to base the rule on the Eucharist, it was denied.
As a result, in 1865, Eymard made the painful decision to leave the Marist congregation with the goal of founding a new order dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. However, establishing the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers was not an easy task. The saint had to endure many hardships, including personal humiliation, financial problems, and physical exhaustion. The greatest obstacle was obtaining official approval for the new congregation. Saint Eymard’s views on preparation for First Holy Communion caught the attention of the Archbishop of Paris, Marie-Dominique-Auguste Sibour. During their subsequent meeting, the saint explained his vision to the Archbishop. As a result, on May 13, 1856, his congregation received formal approval.
Immediately, Father Eymard expanded his ministry, especially among the youth, street children, and wage laborers. Although it was somewhat delayed, he was eventually able to attract people to his congregation. During those early years, the community was extremely poor. The nearby convent of nuns regularly provided food for the saint’s community. Later, Peter also founded the Congregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament for women.
At the age of 57, Saint Peter died in Rome due to illness. In 1962, Pope John XXIII declared Peter Julian Eymard a saint.
