Saint Eusebius of Vercelli was a Roman priest of the fourth century. He was born in Sardinia. During his childhood, he moved to Rome, where he later became a member of the Roman Catholic clergy under Pope Julius. With foresight into the potential for renewal among the clergy, Saint Eusebius was the one who established clerical regulations within the Church, insisting that priests must live in obedience to ecclesiastical and religious laws and fully engage in pastoral work.
These clerical rules reflected the rapid growth of monastic life in the Eastern regions. His model was widely imitated throughout the Western world and became a significant factor in the renewal of the priesthood. In 344, Eusebius was consecrated as the bishop of the diocese of Vercelli. He united his priests into a single communal society. He was also the founder of the dioceses of Turin and Embrun.
In 355, Saint Eusebius participated in the Synod of Milan as the representative of Pope Liberius. This synod aimed to protect Saint Athanasius, who was under threat from the emperor. When the emperor ordered Saint Eusebius and other bishops to denounce Athanasius, Eusebius refused. Instead, he boldly insisted on signing the Nicene Creed. The emperor, angered by his defiance, threatened him, but Eusebius courageously declared that he would not interfere with matters of the Church.
Furious, the emperor exiled Eusebius to Palestine, where he was persecuted in various ways by the Arian heretics. The saint was forced to move from place to place until he was finally released by Emperor Julian. Returning to Italy, Eusebius joined with Saint Hilary of Poitiers in opposing the Arian bishop of Milan. To the joyful acclamation of his people, he returned to Vercelli. Many believe that Saint Eusebius was the author of the Athanasian Creed.
Saint Eusebius died on August 1, 371. A copy of the Gospel written in his own hand is preserved in the cathedral of Vercelli. His courage in resisting Arianism served as an inspiration for many to stand firmly against heretical beliefs.
