St. Cecilia, who placed great importance on spirituality in her life, immersed herself in prayer on her wedding day, away from the guests and family. After the wedding ceremony, when the guests had left, she revealed to her husband Valerian that she loved someone, and that this person was an angel sent by God. She explained that this angel was a source of great jealousy, and therefore, her desire was to remain a virgin. Confused and angry, Valerian responded, “If you show me this angel, and if he is truly from God, I will certainly agree to your wish. But if he is just a human lover, both of you will die.”
Cecilia’s reply was: “If you believe in the one God who lives, and if the water from the baptismal font has been poured upon your head, you will surely see the angel.” Valerian agreed to her request, and during the time of Christian persecution, he followed his wife’s instructions and searched for Bishop Urban, who was hiding in the catacombs. Valerian accepted the faith, and Bishop Urban baptized him.
When Valerian returned, he saw an angel standing next to his wife Cecilia, with glowing wings. The angel wore a crown made of roses and lilies on his head. Valerian’s brother, Tiburtius, also converted to Christianity through the guidance of Cecilia and Urban. After his baptism, he witnessed many miracles. Both Valerian and Tiburtius dedicated their lives entirely to working for the Christian community. They took it as their duty to bury the Christian martyrs who had been killed under the orders of the authorities.
Meanwhile, Valerian and Tiburtius were sentenced to death for refusing to worship the idol of Jupiter. The Roman official Maximus was put in charge of carrying out their execution. During their final moments, Maximus had a vision that led him to convert to Christianity. Maximus then became a Christian martyr as well. Cecilia, the grieving wife, was eventually martyred too, following a courageous and steadfast faith. All three were honored as saints, and St. Cecilia herself went on to become one of the most beloved Christian martyrs in history.
